Dr. D Asks...
Dr. Donald DeFabio, Chiropractic Orthopedist
Until my junior year in college, I knew nothing about Chiropractic, literally.
Then one of my classmates came bounding down the stairs in the dorm, I don't even think she touched the stairs! I asked her what was up and she commented that she just had a great adjustment and was reveling in how wonderful she felt. After that I researched Chiropractic and realized that there was a healthcare system that was natural and dealt with the body's own healing powers to get and stay well. Wow. That made so much sense to me.
At the time I was already eating healthy foods, (no junk food, soda, white sugar, etc.), exercising and taking vitamins. So to find out that there was a way to naturally strengthen my body and to help it fight off disease and sickness sounded too good to be true. Well, the more I learned about Chiropractic, the more I excited I became and to this day my love of Chiropractic continues to grow. I could not be any happier doing any thing else. I believe that being a Doctor of Chiropractic is my true calling.
Chiropractic as I see it is drugless healthcare.
If it does not involve drugs or surgery, is natural and helps the body to heal or maintain wellness, then it falls under my approach to healthcare. My philosophy in patient care is to treat them like I would treat myself, my wife or my children. It sounds reasonable, but the thoroughness, compassion and concern for my patients makes the office "sickeningly sweet." The most common statement a first time patient makes in the office is "Your office is amazing. How come the other chiropractic doctor didn't do that?" The answer is simply, that it just how we do things. Also, all of the techniques, therapies, exercises and home care products that I recommend I have personally used so I can relate to them from a patient's standpoint. New technology is constantly being brought into the office if the research bears out it’s effectiveness. Of course, if I believe any condition requires a referral outside of the office, I will make that recommendation.
Ask anyone, "If you could have anything, what would it be?"
The answer would be "My health!" For me that means getting an adjustment every two weeks ( any longer and I really feel the difference), running or hitting the gym 3-4 times per week, 8 hours of sleep, (otherwise I get edgy), daily prayer and staying on an anti-inflammatory diet. I have tried various diets since my brother George started me on juicing, sprouts and homemade yogurt in the early 70's, and the anti-inflammatory diet has been the best. The concept is simple, if your body is less inflamed then your genetic expression for any inflammatory disease will be reduced. I have found it works the best for me and a majority of my patients.
When I'm not in the office, I'm in the kitchen at home or if the conditions are right, surfing. After God and my family, surfing is the best. Check out my tube ride at Jeffery's Bay the next time you are in the office. For fun I also host and produce The Natural Way to Better Health and Wellness, a local TV show here in Berkeley Heights. Check out the listing TV36coc.com.
The mantra at DCA is "The doctor is always a phone call away." Now I am just a click away! Call or email me and experience the difference of better health and wellness.
