Dr. D Asks some important questions of interest to Berkeley Heights residents - Chiropractor Berkeley Heights Dr. D Asks...

What's the difference between sick care and health care?
Sick care is largely about relieving or suppressing symptoms. Health care is about improving performance. While sick care is about how you feel, health care is about how you function. Sick care is what you do to treat an obvious problem, and health care is what you do to avoid the problem and advance your well-being.
What's the difference between chiropractic and medicine?
Medical treatment focuses on the disease or the symptom. Chiropractic focuses on the person with the disease or the symptom. Medical treatment usually involves changing blood chemistry. Chiropractic involves restoring nervous system integrity. Medical doctors prescribe medicine. Chiropractors adjust the spine—a common source of nervous system interference.

Meet Dr. Stephen Szaro, Jr.

Dr. Stephen SzaroDr. Stephen G. Szaro, Jr. joined DeFabio Chiropractic Associates in June of 2009. He recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Bridgeport as a Doctor of Chiropractic. Dr. Szaro also earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Western New England College in 2005.

Dr. Szaro was born and raised in Bayonne, NJ. He graduated from Bayonne High School in 2001 and excelled on both the Ice Hockey and Cross-Country Track teams. After fighting with low back pain throughout his high school career he was instructed to visit a local chiropractic physician. Since he had found so much relief with each treatment, Dr. Szaro decided that chiropractic would be an excellent career choice.

Dr. Szaro is licensed by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and by the State of New Jersey Board of Chiropractic Examiners. He currently holds certifications in Graston Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization and Active Release Techniques. Dr. Szaro also has a significant interest in rehabilitation, corrective exercise, and functional taping for musculoskeletal injuries including the KinesioTaping Method and Specific Proprioceptive Response Taping (SPRT). This interest has inspired him to take post-graduate courses including FAKTR-PM or Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehabilitation, Provocation, and Motion. This involves treating the soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, nerves) during the ranges of motion that provoke the patient’s symptoms. In addition, he is certified by the Emergency Care and Safety Institute and is a CPR and AED provider.

Dr. Szaro interned at the University of Bridgeport Health Sciences Center and at a multi-disciplinary chiropractic office in Marlborough, CT. He was also one of the first students selected for an internship at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT where he had the opportunity to work with medical doctors, physician assistants, and physical therapists in the areas of physiatry, orthopedics, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, and oncology. Dr. Szaro also had the opportunity to undergo a clinical externship at the Bergen Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation Center in Cliffside Park, NJ.

Dr. Szaro has a passion for working with athletes of all kinds and has extensive training in treating patients with intervertebral disc syndromes. He finds it pertinent to take the time to provide a detailed explanation to each patient about their pain and what can be done to correct it. So if there is something you don’t understand or need to know, just ask! Dr. Szaro is always happy to answer questions and is excited about how chiropractic can help you!
